1st Long Sutton Scout Group

Scouting has been active in Long Sutton since before the Second World War.

However it was disbanded during the war, and was reformed by Mr Brian Levick on 17th November 1952.  It was officially re-registered with Gilwell Park on 22nd December 1952.

At that time the Scouts met in the Church Hall, but soon everyone agreed that they needed a Headquarters of their own.  People started looking around for a suitable site!

August 1954 Saw the Scouts go off on their first camp since their reformation.  A local businessman took them away in his lorry to the seaside, along with all their equipment.  The camp lasted for a week.

The 1st Long Sutton Cub Pack was formed in January 1955, and the Pack still met in the Church Hall.  The adult committee were still trying to find land to build a suitable headquarters.  One site that was suggested was on Cinder Ash Playing Field - just about where the pre-school exists now.

1st Long Sutton Scout Group is now in the District of Holbeach and Spalding, after its merger with Spalding in 2005.

In the May of 1957, a gentleman called Mr Bailey offered to sell the Group a piece of land off Park Lane for £75. And this is where the Scout Hut stands now.

With the land secured, the Group were busy raising money for their own building.  They held Whist Drives, Jumble Sales and every year had a huge Long Sutton Christmas Bazaar - long before they ever had a Scout Hut.

Every year they continued to raise money, and by 1961 had enough to ask the builder to start work.

The building was finished and officially opened on 29th July 1961, almost 9 years after the Group started.  It cost £862. 16s and was built by Warricks.

This wooden hall was still used until about 1985.  For a few years it had become in need of major repairs, and it was felt that a new building was needed.

Mr Walter Cook took on the mammoth task of raising the required funds, and together with a band of faithful helpers Mr Cook raised over £30,000 by holding jumble sales, bingo evenings, and numerous raffles.

The keys to the current headquarters were officially handed over on 11th January 1986, about the same time that Beavers started in Long Sutton.

When the new headquarters was built there was a deep drain at the front of the building, and no footpath on that side of the road.  The firm who built the houses in Delamore Way agreed to the Group having the piece of land which is now grassed, and the Drainage Board agreed to pipe and fill the drain.

This then gave the headquarters its own car park and ensured much greater safety for the children using the hall.

Long Sutton Scout Group has seen many youngsters come through its doors over the past fifty years, and many people have taken over the role of leading the three sections.

We would like to thank them all for our continued success, and say at least a little bit of the history of 1st Long Sutton Scout Group is down to each and every one of them.

Long May It Continue . . . .
